Lecturers from Plimoth Plantation at Sturgis Library

The Sturgis Library's 2008 Kelly Lecture will be held on Wednesday, August 13th at 7:30 PM. This year's lecture will be:

EVERYDAY LIFE IN 17th CENTURY MASSACHUSETTS
NATIVES, SETTLERS, AND MATERIAL CULTURE

Featured speakers are:
  • John McDonagh, Executive Director of Plimoth Plantation

  • Paula Peters of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and Plimoth Plantation

  • Maureen Richard, Curator of Reproduction Collections, Plimoth Plantation
Join us for a lively discussion of the material culture of the Natives and Settlers in Colonial Massachusetts. From the basket to the blunderbuss, baking to blacksmithing, you'll learn about the art and craft of daily life in the 17th century.

Admission is free.

This program was funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is offered as part of the One Book One Barnstable series.

Author William Martin comes to Barnstable


Author William Martin will speak at the Knight Auditorium at Barnstable High School on West Main Road in Hyannis at 4 PM on Sunday, July 20th, 2008. He will discuss his bestselling book Cape Cod, the main selection in the One Book One Barnstable series. A reception and book signing will follow.

Don't miss a wonderful food event at the Sturgis Library on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 3 PM to 5 PM. Participants will hear speakers Doug and Diane Langeland, Tim Friary, David Masch, and David Ross discuss traditional and contemporary Cape Cod food and agriculture. Members of the Sturgis Library's Cookbook Club will be offering samples of many recipes from centuries past and today. For more information on this delicious program, click here. Sturgis Library is located on Route 6A in Barnstable Village, across from St. Mary's Church. Additional parking is available at the Church and at the Courthouse Complex in the Village.

Dr. David Gallo at MMPL--Date Change

Just a heads-up to those interested in attending the presentation "Climate Change: the Bottom Line" by Dr. David Gallo of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Join our Reading and Discussion Series featuring the book Cape Cod by William Martin, and led by educator and South Dennis librarian Anne Speyer. There will be three discussion sessions held at three of the Barnstable Village libraries, beginning in April. Each session will focus on a main topic. Participate in one, two, or all three sessions!
